Maintaining the exterior and interior of your car should be scheduled regularly. Just as you change the motor oil, service the transmission and rotate your tires on a schedule, scheduling care for the paint and interior surfaces, is vital as well. This process will extend the life of the automobile, and a well cared for car will always bring top dollar when you sell or trade. If you neglect cleaning and waxing the exterior, you risk having the paint oxidize, and the clear coat may peel off exposing the color coat. Secondly, neglecting the interior can cause fabrics to weaken and maybe tear, and the plastic and vinyl surfaces may fade and develop a powdery substance on the surface.
Here is a suggested schedule for exterior and interior maintenance:
1.Every 1 or 2 weeks, wash the exterior and apply a good quality liquid wax. Clean wheels to remove brake and road dust and clean and dress the tires. Cleaning the wheel wells is recommended.
2. On the same schedule as the exterior, thoroughly vacuum the interior and trunk and spot clean the carpets floor mats and fabrics. Clean and dress leather. Clean and dress the rubber and vinyl interior surfaces with a good quality product.
3. Once every 3 months, apply a coat of wax to the car. Alternatively you can apply a sealant to the exterior every 6 or 12 months. Both look great and will protect the paint from the UV rays of the sun, acid rain, road and rail dust. Be sure and use paint cleaning clay before waxing/sealing, and you may want to polish away light scratches.
4. Annually shampoo carpets. floor mats and cloth seats. If you have leather you will want to apply a dressing to keep it supple and clean. Cleaning the headliner is also recommended. Finally, clean and dress the engine. Your mechanic will love you.
